Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
