Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
