Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
