Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
