Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
