Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
