Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
